Pictures from Repeal Day

On December 5th, we gathered at DC's oldest bar, Billy Martin's Tavern, to celebrate the anniversary of Prohibition's repeal. I went through the 80 blurry pictures sloppily snapped by no fewer than eight people that evening, and found none worth looking at, but I posted a few anyway to kick of the holiday season.

One day, people will regularly celebrate this holiday thanks in part to the Internet and my drinking blog, DC Drinks.

Toasts abounded ...

Glasses touched ...

The bar's owner told stories of old ...

Yours truly got stanko ...

Jim sat where JBJ and Sam Rayburn hashed out legislation decades ago ...

More toasts were made ...

We reconnected with old friends ...

Lovely new girlfriends showed up ...

Sailors contemplated life ...

And the bill wiped us out ...
Comments:
You admonish the pictures but I think they capture the night perfectly, worth every pixel.

I could used some of that livation action.

D.C.'s oldest bar wasn't happy this summer with a group of neighbors from across town—who live in and around the 700 block of 8th Street NE.

On June 11, the Nor'easters setup an amplifier and blasted the intersection of Wisconsin & N St NW from 3-5 p.m. to demonstrate the absurdity of D.C.'s broken noise law. It allows unlimited, amplified, non-commercial speech from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in any D.C. residential community. Our community is pummeled by four hours of amplified speech every Saturday.

The nearly empty outdoor tables of Billy Martin's (seen in the back of this photo) were packed full of people when we arrived ten minute earlier. We tried to explain our purpose to the manager, but he said he'd have us arrested if we stepped foot on the property.

Amplied noise definitely hurt the guy's business--and we felt really badly about it. But it goes to the point: What chance does an outdoor cafe have on H Street NE with endless amplified diatribes?
